What are scleral lenses?
Scleral contact lenses are a larger diameter lens that provide more clear and comfortable vision compared to soft contacts, RGPs, or traditional hard lenses because the lens does not touch the clear front surface of the eye (cornea), which is highly sensitive. This lens rests on the “white part” of the eye (sclera) and vaults completely over, creating a new high- definition refractive surface while worn.
These lenses are more stable on the eye, do not move around, will not fall out, do not get bits of sand or grit behind them, are highly durable, and are surprisingly comfortable to wear when fit correctly.
Scleral Lenses are used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Glare, Haloes, Starbursting, or ghosting usually a result of irregular astigmatism
- Inadequate vision with soft contact lenses
- Dry Eye
- Complications from previous eye surgery (LASIK, PRK, RK, cataract surgery)
- Keratoconus
- Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
- Corneal Transplant
